  • ABOUT THE PROJECT

    BACKGROUND

I was selected for a special senior project section in the University of Houston Digital Media Program. In this section, we were given the opportunity to create brand identities for students of the Wolff Center, which is the #1 entrepreneurship college in the United States.

    MY WORK

I was eager to build a solid brand identity for my students. One of my students was Gabi Rojas, a bright entrepreneurship student with a heart for sustainability and the success of small businesses. I wanted to capture the essence of her message in her brand identity.

My Creation Journey

Let's find out who Gabi is and how she wants to be represented.

In my first meeting with Gabi, I could tell she had a passion for starting something that made a difference in the world. She wanted to contribute to the success of small businesses by providing them with different services that met their needs. She wanted to convey a sense of growth with her brand identity. She told me a lot about herself and what she stands for, and I began getting a clearer idea of what she wanted for her brand identity. I had her send me inspirations for different aspects of her brand, such as logos and imagery.

I also wanted to explain to Gabi how important a brand identity is and what it encompasses. To do this, I created a presentation for our first meeting.

Gabi's Brand Statement:
As a passionate advocate for holistic health and personal growth, I’m in constant pursuit of my potential through purposeful action. With an unwavering dedication to empathy and encouragement, I am committed to creating supportive and uplifting environments of togetherness.

A logo needs to be iconic, memorable, and stand the test of time.

For Gabi's logo, I wanted to convey a sense of growth and prosperity. I also wanted to capture Gabi's positivity, as she is a very positive person. Gabi told me she wanted to have a silhouette of mother nature in her logo, so I created the following iterations.

While she liked the inclusion of mother nature, she wished the logo were more cohesive. She also sent me more logo inspirations that included flowery patterns akin to roses, and a thick yet modern font. I went back to the drawing board and came up with the next logo iteration.

Gabi liked this version, but I showed her a different, more modern iteration that she enjoyed more. In the following version, I diverged from her original want for a sans-serif font and went for a serif font. She liked this logo, so I went in this direction with her logo design.

There is also an animated version of this logo. See the process for creating the animated version below.

Adding some color to the mix.

To start off, I showed Gabi three different color palettes that she could use for her final brand identity.

The first color palette was meant to complement a more flowery, rose themed version of her logo.

The second color palette was meant to complement her mother nature logo, with cooler colors and a hint of red for a possible rose incorporation into the logo.

The third color palette more fully embraces the calm, earthy tones that Gabi originally wanted. I wanted to give her different options so that she could have more choices and ideas for her color palette.

In the end, Gabi took inspiration from the other color palettes and chose the following final palette.

What type of type?

Originally, Gabi wanted a sans-serif font for her type. I showed her three different iterations of type to either take inspiration from or choose for her final typography.
After choosing a serif font for her main logo type, she decided she would like it to be her heading type as well. When I showed her the following typography, she was satisfied and wanted it incorporated in her final brand identity.

Drumroll, please...

I collected Gabi's values, goals, and mission, and compiled all of the work we created into one final brand identity presentation. We presented it for my senior capstone presentation.

In addition, we also recorded an elevator pitch video for her SeekerPitch profile. See the video and final brand identity below.
