  • ABOUT THE PROJECT

    BACKGROUND

I was selected for a special senior project section in the University of Houston Digital Media Program. In this section, we were given the opportunity to create brand identities for students of the Wolff Center, which is the #1 entrepreneurship college in the United States.

    MY WORK

I was eager to build a solid brand identity for my students. One of my students was Gabi Rojas, a bright entrepreneurship student with a heart for sustainability and the success of small businesses. I wanted to capture the essence of her message in her logo and the motion design. The end result was a logo that conveyed the concept of "growing", and I was able to bring this to life with motion design.

My Creation Journey

Sketching is an essential step in the logo motion design process.

When I started working on the logo motion design for Gabi Rojas, I knew that I wanted it to convey a sense of growth since that's what Gabi is all about - growing small businesses and sustainability. The first step in my design process was to sketch out possible motions on paper.

I played around with different ideas and visualized how the logo could communicate its message through motion. It was really exciting to explore concepts such as a flower blooming and using bouncing/stretching to bring it to life, and I felt like I was tapping into Gabi's vision for her brand.

Sketching on paper gave me the freedom to be creative and experiment with different ideas. It helped me to identify the most effective concept and refine it further in the later stages of the design process. Sketching was definitely a crucial step in creating a logo motion design that captures Gabi Rojas' brand message.

High-quality graphics are key to establishing a strong brand. Making the logo a vector will achieve this.

For the second step in my logo motion design process for Gabi Rojas, I needed to make the logo a vector in Adobe Illustrator and prepare it for transfer to Adobe After Effects.

Converting the logo into a vector was essential to ensure that it retained its quality and could be scaled without losing resolution. I made sure to separate the petals in Gabi's logo onto different layers in Illustrator so that I could individually animate them later in After Effects. Adobe Illustrator allowed me to create and edit the vector graphics with precision, making sure that each petal was in the correct place and had the right shape.

Once the logo was a vector, I transferred it to Adobe After Effects, where I could apply motion graphics and animation techniques to create the desired effect. This step was crucial in the logo motion design process because it allowed me to create a high-quality motion design that effectively communicated Gabi Rojas' brand message.

Bringing the logo to life using animation.

After transferring the Gabi Rojas logo to After Effects, I began animating it using squashing and stretching techniques to convey the blooming of the flower petals graphic. I wanted to make the logo look playful and dynamic, so I decided to have the flower graphic slide across the screen. To make the motion look more organic, I also added some easing and bouncing effects.

Once I was happy with the animation of the flower petals graphic, I added the text "Gabi" and "Rojas" to the composition. I wanted the text to reveal itself gradually, so I had the flower petals graphic reveal the text "Gabi" and then transition smoothly into being caught by the text "Rojas". To achieve this effect, I used masks to hide and reveal the text layers, and I timed the animations carefully to create a sense of flow and cohesion.

Overall, I think the motion design successfully captures Gabi Rojas' brand message and looks engaging and fun.

Curating for my client.

Gabi was glad that I was taking the extra mile to animate her logo. She gave me ideas for other iterations of the animation, such as having two yellow swirls growing out of the flower petals. I took her feedback and decided to make her more iterations so she could see what she likes best.

Drumroll, please...

After taking Gabi's wants and needs into consideration, I created her final logo animation. I reused the petal animation from before and used masking in After Effects to create an effect that had her logo text be "written" into view. She also asked about having a burst of yellow, which I incorporated through two diverging streams. She was satisfied with the final result, and it was incorporated in her final brand identity.
